Elon Musk: $35,000 Tesla Coming and Hyperloop Transport (D11 Conference, Tesla Shareholder Meeting) $TSLA

Elon Musk, co-founder and CEO of Tesla Motors, founder of SpaceX, and chairman of Solar City, had a very interesting conversation with AllThingsD's Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg at the D11 conference a few weeks ago (watch below). He talked about Tesla's Model S, its Supercharger stations, space rockets, his planned "hyperloop" transportation system to replace high speed rail, and the state of the internet right now. Musk said Tesla's "3rd Generation" vehicle, "a smaller version of the Model S at about half the price," would be available at the end of 2016 or 2017 for 30,000-$35,000. And at Tesla's annual shareholder meeting, Musk said, "if we get lucky, maybe we can incorporate some of the autopilot or self driving elements into that vehicle. But I don't know if we'll be able to do that in time."

Musk also tweeted that the Tesla Model S (priced around $70,000) is much cheaper when factoring in tax credits and gas savings.

During the D11 Conference interview, Musk said the "hyperloop" was "a cross between a Concorde, a railgun and an air hockey table," and said it would be cheaper and faster than California's planned bullet train. Does the hyperloop use quantum levitation? It's cool that Elon Musk is starting a revolution in the auto and energy industries right now. I bet he eventually figures out a way to run Tesla vehicles entirely on solar power (related: Elon Musk on the Future of Solar Power - TED Talk, 2/2013). There are already solar superchargers available. Tesla's website says "over time, Tesla plans to add solar canopies to all Supercharger stations." Regarding Musk's space rocket company SpaceX, he thinks humans need to be "multi-planetary" to avoid an extinction event, so he's trying to revolutionize space travel. We need to diversify planets. It's interesting that people are now comparing the PayPal co-founder to Steve Jobs.

$TSLA is up over 200% in the past year, not bad.
