A Record 47.7 Million Americans Are On Food Stamps, Up 18% From 2010; House Passes Bill That Would Cut $40 Billion From Program
According to the USDA and PBS NewsHour, a record 47.7 million Americans were on food stamps in June 2013 and FY 2013, up 26.8% from 37.6 million in October 2009 and up 18.3% from 40.3 million in FY 2010 (source: fns.usda.gov). Green shoots! The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) costs more than $78 billion a year and the House just passed a bill that would cut $40 billion from the program over the next 10 years (watch the PBS segment below).
