More than 200 firefighters responded to the four-alarm blaze Saturday night:

(SOUNDBITE) (English) NEW YORK CITY FIRE COMMISSIONER, DANIEL A. NIGRO SAYING:

"We found a fire on the 50th floor of this building, quite a large apartment. The apartment was virtually entirely on fire. This was a very difficult fire, the apartment was quite large. The rest of the building had a considerable amount of smoke."

The blaze broke out in the apartment d sixty-seven year old Tod Brassner. He was found unresponsive and later pronounced dead at a nearby hospital.

One resident got word of the blaze from a high-profile Trump associate.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) TRUMP TOWER RESIDENT, DENNIS SHIELDS SAYING:

"There was noise and there was a funny smell and then Michael Cohen, who is Trump's lawyer, texted me 'Are you in the building?' and I texted him back yeah and he said 'You should get out, there's a fire.'"

The building, with its ground floor shops and restaurants, is also a major tourist hub.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) EYEWITNESS, JOAN LLOYD SAYING:

"All of a sudden as we were going up the escalator there was this massive noise and my son said 'look up' and there was all this fire and smoke bellowing from the window."

U.S. President Donald Trump - who has an office and private residence inside Trump Tower - was not in the building at the time… nor was any member of the Trump family.

After the fire was extinguished, Trump tweeted: Very confined (well built building). Firemen (and women) did a great job. Thank you!
